easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has revealed expansion plans at Glasgow Airport today, welcoming a fifth Airbus A320 family aircraft to the Scottish base and announcing a new route between Glasgow and Birmingham.
The A320 family aircraft will remain based in Glasgow throughout the year, providing 340,000 more seats for passengers travelling to and from Glasgow. It joins two 156-seat Airbus A319 and two 186-seat A320 aircraft already serving the airline’s customers in Glasgow.
The addition of the new aircraft will create around 50 jobs for Glasgow-based flight, cabin and ground crew.
The airline has also announced a new route between Glasgow and Birmingham today. The domestic city connection will operate 13 times a week throughout the year, with flights launching on 29 March 2020. Seats are due to go on sale in the coming weeks.
On 10 November 1995 easyJet’s first ever flight, EZY121, took off for Glasgow from London Luton. Since then easyJet has remained committed to the airport by maintaining a continuous operation and flying over 34 million passengers to and from Glasgow.
Today, easyJet is the largest airline in Glasgow and operates up to 294 flights a week across 19 routes. easyJet was the first airline to carry one million passengers in a year from Glasgow and the airline continues to see passenger numbers grow.
easyJet offers up to 10 flights a day from Glasgow to London airports Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, as well as up to three flights a day to Belfast and Bristol. In 2019 easyJet will see its domestic links from Glasgow increase by over 5%.
Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be celebrating our expansion at Glasgow Airport. The addition of another aircraft will help us to deliver long term, sustainable growth at the base providing customers with a greater range of destinations, all with low fares and great service.
“We are also very excited about launching our new route from Glasgow to Birmingham. This will provide even more great value and convenient domestic connectivity for our customers.
“easyJet has selected Glasgow as the focus of its growth in Scotland and we are excited about the future at Glasgow.”
Francois Bourienne, AGS Airports Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “Both easyJet and Glasgow Airport have enjoyed a long and productive relationship since the airline’s inaugural flight landed here almost a quarter of a century ago.
“easyJet’s plans to expand operations is fantastic news for both the airport and over one million passengers who travel with the airline from Glasgow each year.
“This is a significant investment given that the introduction of a fifth based aircraft brings with it an additional 340,000 seats annually and will support approximately 50 new jobs at Glasgow Airport.
“The additional aircraft not only puts Glasgow Airport on a course for future growth, but also underlines easyJet’s continued commitment to our passengers.
“The introduction of easyJet’s new Birmingham route is also welcome news as services to England’s second biggest city continue to be very popular with both our business and leisure customers.”
